A message from the Vicarage

Dear Friends,

One of my firmest beliefs is that the church cannot exist in isolation. The church as a whole must live in the world and be part of the world, with all the problems and challenges which are inherent in this duty. Every local church is part of a local community, and we have obligations to those communities. We would all dearly love more people in the community to be involved in the church, but it is the church which must make the first moves – if our lives are inspired by the love which Jesus showed, we have to let people know about it.

This means caring about what is going on – and if necessary, doing something about it. How much do we care, for instance, about the threat to our local post office?

Enough to take some action? I do hope so.

If we lose our post office, we will lose our shop – which provides for so many different needs.

Considerable numbers of people will be seriously inconvenienced if they are not able to use the facilities which are available at present. So it would be very good if every single one of us were to write a letter protesting at the decision to close the Leven Valley post office, and replace it with a very limited outreach service. We may win the battle, we may not – we certainly won't if we don't do anything! And whatever the outcome, we will show to those around us that as Christians we are concerned about the quality of community life, and that we do care about people.

There was a preliminary meeting the other week about the proposed soap box derby to be held in Haverthwaite in August. Not many attended, but of those who did, more than one said to me that it was good to see the church being committed to community events. I am sure that the same can be said of much which happens in the benefice, the aim of which should always be firstly involvement in the community, and only secondly fund-raising.

So let's get involved in the campaign to keep the post office. Let's show our church school that we are interested in its welfare by dropping in to the spring fair on the morning of Saturday 17th May. Let's show those around us that the church is alive and kicking.

Somebody once said that the church is the only organisation which exists primarily for the benefit of those who do not belong to it. I think that there is more than a grain of truth in that challenging thought.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Calvert.

Helping with the Chalice

I have always appreciated help with administering the chalice, not just for practical reasons [saving time, saving my bad back!] but also because it says something about lay and ordained sharing together in worship.

One of our parishes is a little short of helpers at the moment, and one or two people have volunteered for training. It occurred to me that I should ask if there is anyone in the benefice who feels called to this particular ministry [subject of course to PCC approval]. If you feel that this is the particular task to which God is calling you, please have a word.
