Rural Wheels is a demand responsive transport service, provided by Cumbria County Council for people in rural areas who either do not have access to, or are unable to use a local bus service. Users of the scheme will be collected from home to their destination, usually their nearest town to attend appointments, access shops etc. or to link with bus or train services. The scheme is also making use of smart-card technology which means that no cash is needed when travelling; payment is made via a pre-credited "smart-card". Passengers pay 30p per mile traveled through the smart-card and can "top up" the card at specified local outlets. Rural Wheels makes use of approved transport operators already providing services for Cumbria County Council in a planned and co-ordinated approach.
Transport is available Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm. Two working days notice is required to book a journey. You may need to be flexible about when you travel. Children under 5 travel free and children and young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Leaflets containing more information and application forms are available from the Parish Council, Libraries Post Offices and other local information outlets or by phoning 01228 606721. If you have any questions regarding Rural Wheels or would like to receive an application form by post, please contact Joan Clarke, the Demand Responsive Co-ordinator on 01228 606721.
