Our first meeting of the new season was a very successful A.G.M. The following are some of the points and information from the meeting: Treasurer's ReportThe treasurer gave a report which indicated that we were still in the black and membership had increased again. There was a recommendation that as last year the subscription be maintained at £5.00. We gave an appreciative vote of thanks to Peter as he was finishing this year after handling our accounts so efficiently. Chairman's ReportThe chairman summarised the success of the year. We had a variety of very good evenings and some excellent talks. A special highlight was the emotional account by Raymond Williams of his imprisonment and forced march through Europe. The year was also especially significant for the society as we established our archives (with special thanks to Ron Mein) and the purchase of the society digital camera thanks to a Cumbria County Council grant. Both these mean that we can contribute effectively to the preservation of history. The chairman expanded on the concept of hidden histories in Britain particularly in private houses, in furniture, art, artefact's and the buildings themselves. Anything we can do to unlock this as a society is very important. Secretary's ReportThe secretary spoke further about the importance of the archives and thanks to all those who have contributed. He also spoke about the DVD digital camera and its use, reminding members it could be borrowed and involvement in filming etc. would be welcome. The Chairman then stood down and the Secretary took the chair for the nomination and election of officers for the coming year. October's MeetingFriday 26th October 7:00 pm
November's MeetingFriday 30th November 7:00 pm Can I remind you that subscriptions are now due - £5.00 to be paid to Richard Sanderson (Chairman) |
Negotiations under way to create Monument Status for Low Wood Gunpowder Works |
|
The site at Low Wood could soon be given ancient monumnet status - work is on going to establish a trust to take care of the old workings and to find funding to restore and clear the area for tours and lectures. |
